Since the Time of Flight sensor knows how far away an object is from the back of the camera lens, the software can calculate how long the object is across any of its surfaces, and with that data, it can make a very well-educated guess about the other objects in the camera's field of view. AR applications that measure objects, for example, become available as well as some very valuable distance information between the camera lens, the subject of a photo, and the background.

"Vi har testat att använda en tof-sensor utomhus med modifierade algoritmer och det går när det inte är direkt solljus. Men är det skarpt ljus kommer signalen att dränkas av solen. Lidar har en mycket mer fokuserad ljusstråle. Den skickar ut en stråle mot en punkt och mäter bara den punkten."

Framförallt fungerar ToF tydligen dåligt eller inte alls utomhus, pga solen som dränker allting i IR-ljus. LIDAR påverkas inte på samma sätt.
