Exclusive: Tesla prepares electricity offers – demand control and complete package.
Selected customers received a post with interesting new information from Tesla on Friday – and a reader was kind enough to point this out to teslamag.de: In an email, Tesla invited to take part in a survey on energy tariffs, charging electric cars and batteries Storage for home and photovoltaic. And the very specific questions give the impression that Tesla is preparing a large-scale and holistic entry into the German electricity market. The offensive is probably even European or worldwide.
Eight pages of specific Tesla questions
How many customers received the email and whether there might be versions for other countries remained open at first; however, it reads translated, which speaks for at least an English model. The subject line “What do you think of a Tesla electricity tariff” explains that Tesla can connect hardware and software so that their users can save money and bring more clean energy to society.
The eight-page survey itself shows how far-reaching Tesla’s electricity supply could be. Mention is made of both demand control (“under what conditions would you allow Tesla to control the charging time of your car?”) And the possibility of being able to obtain Tesla electricity only from Tesla as the owner of a photovoltaic system including the Powerwall storage. And Tesla would like to know whether customers would be interested in an “energy package” with photovoltaics, storage, an electric car charging station and 100 percent renewable electricity from a single source and when.
Tesla customers as electricity traders
Tesla thus seems to be taking a big step in the direction of what CEO Elon Musk recently described as the overarching vision beyond just electric car production and sales: (Also) private customers should use Tesla hardware and software be able to participate in an electricity market that is ultimately fed 100 percent from sustainable sources.
Electric cars play a major role in two ways. First, they drive completely emission-free if their electricity is generated from renewable sources. Secondly, they are otherwise standing around a lot and can themselves help to balance electricity supply and demand during this time: Millions of Tesla together have many gigawatt hours of storage capacity, and as the question of charging control shows, Tesla would like to use this as well do. Even bi-directional charging is said to play a role in the overall picture, according to reports from this spring – Tesla electric cars could not only use electricity when there is a lot available, but also give up a few kilowatt hours if there is a high demand.
More info on Tesla’s Battery Day
The news about the electricity offerings should be related to Tesla’s big battery information day, which is now announced for the end of September. Then Musk wants to explain, among other things, how he can get a multiple of today’s production of battery cells for electric cars and small and large floor-standing batteries at low prices. But, as is becoming increasingly clear, this storage aspect should only be a small part of the overall energy picture at Tesla.
