When Do Heat Pumps Quit Working Efficiently?
Heat pumps rely on heat within outdoor air to keep your home at comfortable temperatures during winter. The heat pump transfers heat from the outdoors into your home to warm your living areas. Even during cold weather, there is adequate heat available for the heat pump to operate. Atlanta’s mild climate throughout the majority of the year makes heat pumps an efficient heating choice for homes.
Once temperatures fall below a certain point, heat pumps are not able to work efficiently. They use more electricity in attempts to adequately heat the home, which increases your energy bills. Heat pumps are rated for efficient operation within a certain temperature range.
The optimal temperature range for conventional air source heat pump operation is above 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat pump begins to lose efficiency once temperatures dip to 40 degrees and is no longer the most efficient heating option once temperatures fall to 25 to 30 degrees.
When temperatures fall to freezing and below, the heat pump is not useless – it still runs, but it uses far more energy and typically struggles to maintain comfortable temperatures inside the home due to the lack of outdoor heat available for heat transfer.
Volkswagen claims that e-Golfs equipped with the heat pump regain about 30% range in the right conditions – which is around 25-35 degrees Fahrenheit outside. If it gets much colder than that, the heat pump is less effective and the cars will use their resistive heaters instead.
Mer:
German technology company MAHLE is working on its own heat pump to sell to automakers. It claims its technology can improve cold-weather cruising range by between 7 and 20 percent.
“In field tests with a compact electric car, MAHLE has demonstrated that its ITS reduces the loss of cruising range substantially, especially at cold ambient temperatures. The original vehicle used, equipped with conventional electric heating, started with a cruising range of 100 kilometers. When the vehicle was equipped with the ITS, the cruising range increased to 116 kilometers,” states MAHLE in a press release.
Given the higher range of a Tesla, the potential 7 – 30% range savings a heat pump can offer during cold weather driving is a much higher number of miles than what you see with a lower range car. If a 250-mile Model 3 Standard Range Plus had this technology, it could potentially gain 20 miles or more depending on conditions.

Exakt hur effektiv Tesla lösning är vid olika temperaturer återstår att se (TeslaBjörn, you have been summoned!), men helt klart är att det blir bättre med en värmepump än utan.
