MG will launch a brand-new electric SUV in the UK later this year, with the planned flagship model joining the MG 5 and MG ZS EVs in the maker’s line-up. The as-yet-unnamed crossover will be based on the Chinese-built Roewe Marvel-R, which was revealed in its home market last summer.
Additional images of the car have surfaced on social media, showing the model with the MG badge on the nose. The rest of the car looks largely unchanged from the Roewe variant, with a large, blanked-out grille, swept-back headlights and big alloy wheels.
We’ve not yet seen any interior images of the new MG, although the previous-generation Roewe Marvel-X featured a huge 19.4-inch portrait touchscreen, plus a set of fully digital instruments. Leather trim is likely to feature throughout.
When it goes on sale here, the MG is likely to rival larger electric SUVs such as the Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID.4. At 4,678mm nose-to-tail, the Roewe Marvel-R is 364mm longer than the MG ZS and 104mm longer than the HS, but only 30mm longer than the Enyaq.
In China, rear and all-wheel-drive versions of the Roewe are offered, both with a 52.5kWh lithium-ion battery. The all-wheel-drive model boasts three electric motors with a total power output of more than 300bhp – resulting in a 0-62mph sprint time of just over four seconds. Roewe claims a range of around 230 miles on the NEDC test cycle; we'd expect 160-170 miles in real-world driving.
We expect MG to confirm the new SUV for the UK market in the coming months, with an on-sale date later in 2021. Given the MG ZS’ starting price of £25,495 after the government grant, a figure of just over £30,000 is likely.
